TWF2025-441 Offas Dyke - Kington to Knighton (Monday)

£18.00
TWF Walks and Events will be on-sale in early 2025

Walk #20 grading: 4 Boot

As well as superb views from the remote hills, this stage of Offa’s Dyke is notable for long stretches of well preserved Dyke before the walk enters its ‘spiritual home’ – Knighton (Tref-y-Clawdd, meaning the town on the dyke in Welsh).

On leaving Kington the walk passes over Brandor Hill and its golf course, the highest in England, and then through Granner Wood, which is being restored to broadleaf woodland by the Woodland Trust. The walk drops down to the River Lugg at Dolley Old Bridge with its many meanders, where we may see dippers and a glimpse of a kingfisher if we are lucky.

From Furrow and Hawthorn Hill there are stunning views westwards into Radnorshire. The site of Owain Glyndwr’s Battle of Pilleth can be seen from here, a square clump of trees marking the burial site of the soldiers.

The final descent into Knighton is almost halfway up the Dyke and we finish at the Offa’s Dyke Centre.

A minibus will be provided to transport the group back from Knighton to Kington. The price of the walk includes the minibus.

Note that this is a very strenuous walk and not to be underestimated. There are no amenities at all along the way, so bring lots to eat and drink, more so if the weather is hot. Ankle support boots are very highly recommended due to the uneven nature of many walking surfaces. But it is worth the effort for the amazing scenery! A very rewarding and enjoyable walk.

Sponsored by Elmsleigh B&B, Cusop, Hay-on-Wye

Maximum walking group size is 12 (+ leaders)

For safety reasons, the new booking process includes a pop-up window that requests the name, phone number and emergency contact details for each walker on each walk. Please ensure that pop-ups are allowed for the TWF website on your browser. See more details in the Website News.
