TWF2026-244 In the Steps of the Grwyne Fawr Dam Workers (4 Boot, Saturday)

£10.00

Grading: 4 Boot

This walk follows the paths taken, not just by the dam workers, but also the early surveyors of the Grwyne Fawr valley as a possible site for the reservoir. We will start by following Rhiw Cwnstab to Rhos Dirion before descending past Blaen Bwch toward Capel y Ffin at the top of the Vale of Ewyas. We will then ascend the Fwddog ridge to approach the Grywne Fawr Reservoir from above.

In the early 20th Century, before the road and rail tracks along the valley were built, this was the easiest way for surveyors and engineers to access the location chosen for the dam. As well as having a beautiful and remote walk, we will gain some understanding of why this location was chosen, seeing for ourselves some of the problems that were faced in choosing such an isolated and wild location to build a dam.
