Grading: 4 Boot
From the start at Bwlch y Waun, we follow the footpath generally downhill NE to cross the footbridge and then the Cwm Crawnon road to climb the path skirting Y Neuadd.
We continue on this path to cross the boundary to open upland and from there, contour along the edge of Llangynidr Moor to the head of Cwm Pyrgad. Shortly after, we join the road and tracks through the disused quarries of Chwarel Blaen Dyffryn and Cwar Hendre. After these we cross the head of Dyffryn Crawnon, following the former Brinore Tramroad which took limestone from the quarries to the canal at Talybont. The tramroad traverses Gwaun Nant Ddu past the source of Nant Ddu, one of the three streams that join in the Cwm to form Afon Crawnon.
From there we head NE passing through Pen Bwlch Glascwm and continue climbing gently to gain the Beacons Way at Pen Rhiw Calch. From there it is just under 2km back to our start point, having completed the horseshoe.
If time and energy permits, we may then visit the summit of Tor y Foel (an additional 2km and 140m of climbing), which has excellent views all-round, including Talybont Reservoir and the main summits towards Pen y Fan, as well as of the horseshoe just completed.
Sponsored by: Longtown Mountain Rescue Team and Henderson Community Hall, Talybont
Maximum walking group size is 14 (+ leaders)
There is limited room for parking at the start. So, if necessary, a Car Share will operate from Henderson Community Hall in Talybont to the walk start at Bwlch y Waun.
